Health Benefits of a cuddle

According to family therapist Virginia Satir, cuddling is essential to health, even to survival.

Cuddles have been linked to a variety of health benefits including lowered blood pressure, better overall mood, even to higher IQ in children who recieve sufficient hugs.

Physical benefits are not the only things passed on in a hug. Hugs also help people to bond on an emotional level. Hugs increase feelings of safety, security, trust, strength, healing, self worth, belonging, happiness, and appreciation.

Why oxytocin makes men cuddle their babies

Scientists had known for a long time that oxytocin was associated with the affectionate bonds between a mother and her new born baby.  Oxytocin thus quickly became known as the ‘Cuddle Hormone’, promoting touch, affection, protectiveness.  Recently, a plethora of new studies have associated oxytocin with everything from altruism to sexual attractiveness. Now, the possible role that oxytocin might play in making new fathers want to cuddle their babies has finally been investigated, and it appears, established.

Ruth Feldman, a psychology professor at an Israeli university and assistant professor at Yale, measured the oxytocin levels of 80 different couples and found that not only mothers but also fathers post increases after the birth of their child.

The more the men in the study cuddled their babies, the more their oxytocin levels rose. “It’s like a feedback loop,” Dr. Feldman says. “The more you touch, the more oxytocin you have; the more oxytocin, the more you touch. But you need to initiate this feedback loop, by holding and touching and kissing your baby.” Also, she found a link between the oxytocin levels of partners. Mothers’ levels predicted fathers’ levels later on, “as if fathers somehow get biologically attuned to their wives,” Dr. Feldman says.

Why women need cuddling..and oxytocin!

The Examiner explains why cuddling their partners is so important to women.  Essentially, cuddling is a survival need for women.  Women need to establish an emotional bond with whoever they are having sex with, otherwise they are in danger of being left carrying any resulting baby.  Cuddling raises oxytocin in women and makes them feel good because it is a signal that that emotional bond and commitment has been achieved.

A 2006 study by the Berman Center for Women’s Health in Chicago showed that couples who regularly indulge in spontaneous, non-sexual physical affection are more satisfied with their relationships.  So cuddle if you would like your woman to feel closely connected and peaceful with you. You will see the benefits in terms of increased sexual satisfaction as she appreciates you more for understanding her cuddling needs.
